
This week, I really couldn’t go past the concept of a hyperreality as a focus. At first, I didn’t completely grasp the theory through the prisoners example, however the quote found on the meme shown by Teo during the lecture that read “Homesick for a place I’m not even sure exists” tied it all up all nicely for me. It also sparked the idea in my head that maybe people who believe in certain conspiracy theories are experiencing a hyperreality.
Hear me out:
Hyperreality is a simulated model of a real. Conspiracy theorists, such as Flat Earthers, not only believe the possibility of a theory being true, rather they live in that truth. Similarly to the prisoners not believing the escapee, a Flat Earther believes the Earth is flat and that any theory otherwise, including the most common (and proven) of the Earth being a sphere, is rejected.
Or perhaps it is the majority that are the prisoner’s glued to the shadows on the wall…
