Hey, remember when I said in my last post that I had this great idea for a DA and that I was excited to get cracking on with it? Well… it hasn’t really worked out.
To reiterate briefly on what I initially thought my DA would be, I wanted to create a YouTube Channel dedicated to topics of the Creative Arts, including its industries and how to support them, under the alias of ‘drawoncedrawtwice’. As much as I continue to love this idea, working filming and editing into my current schedule is near impossible. It has been 2 weeks and I have roughly 5 minutes of film which basically just consists of me fumbling over my words and realizing I really didn’t have the time to flesh out these videos to the quality I would like.
I know we are supposed to just go for it and that it’s fine to fail, hence the point of this project, but you need material to be able to try and then fail if you get what I mean. I haven’t even made it up to the starting line yet… honestly, I haven’t even made it to the track.
The biggest issue I was struggling with was finding the time to do the research on each topic I wanted to film. I’m currently studying full time and have 3 jobs I juggle to afford to pay rent each week; I think it’s safe to say I don’t need to go much deeper into how I have no time to spare for the time consuming process of researching, filming then editing.
It truly is unfortunate, but I hope to kick off that project some time in the future, maybe later in my studies. However, that leaves me with… well… nothing to go on.
Back to the drawing board.
What I need is a project that fits the bill of a time-poor Uni student who is also money-poor that doesn’t really do much besides study’s and works. It narrows down the options quite drastically.
Speaking with my peers in class the other day gave me an overview of the kind of things that other people are attempting, most seemed to be blogs of varies themes, like photography or music. That’s cool that most people are using their talents to entertain an audience, but I just don’t think a blog format is for me. As much as I could convert my video ideas into blog posts, I feel it wouldn’t be as affective in terms of the topics I wanted to discuss, especially since most consisted of Visual Arts topics which I feel would be elevated through a visual platform.
Plus, it doesn’t solve the issue of not having the time to spend researching. I already have a lot of research to do for my classes so recreational study would be quite time consuming and take away from time I could be using towards other posts/essays.
So I thought about the things I do on a regular basis that I could capture as content for an online audience. And, funnily enough, the first thing that came to mind was driving. I live an hour away from campus so three days each week I spend 2 hours per day driving back and forth for class. 6 hours that I’m just sitting doing pretty much nothing, besides paying attention to the road and listening to music. It made me wonder how I could use that time to create something for this project.
My roommate has a lapel microphone, which sparked the idea of creating a podcast that I could record while I was driving to and from Uni. I haven’t really fleshed out the idea much further than that considering a) that’s probably illegal and b) I’m usually driving very early in the morning just as I’ve woken up and really don’t think I would have much to say besides whining about how early it is. Not very interesting if you ask me but, then again, who knows? Maybe it could be the next big thing.
Besides that, I came up with one earlier this morning that I thought was so brilliant that I had to pull my car over to write it down before I forgot. Tote bags are a weirdly big thing currently. I feel like 80% of people I see on campus use one to carry their books and laptops, not to mention shopping. It’s one of the latest fashion accessories, so why not make my own? Not like, sewing them… I couldn’t sew to save my life. I mean buy blank tote bags and drawing designs for them.
Tote bags are much cheaper to purchase than t-shirts and tote bags don’t get washed as often so you don’t have to worry as much about the kind of materials you use to create the designs. Using some Posca Pens or some iron on lettering could really make a great product without breaking the bank. And, speaking of which, I could make a bit of extra money as I go.
Anywho, those are the three somewhat crafted ideas I’m tossing around at the moment. If you have any thoughts, feel free to let me know!
